we teach olympic taekwondo

Master Myung’s Taekwondo Academy is a member of the Ontario Taekwondo Association and World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). We teach WTF Olympic style Taekwondo and follow the same rules as the Olympic taekwondo games. All of our black belt members receive International Black Belt Certification through Kukkiwon (WTF governing body in South Korea). Only Kukkiwon registered Black Belts can compete at the Provincial, National, International and Olympic levels of government recognized Taekwondo tournaments in Canada.

The High Performance Program develops athletes capable of successfully competing at local, provincial, national and international competitions. The program is based on modern sports science principles and traditional training techniques. Along with the sport-specific training, the team must follow a strength and conditioning program that is tailored for each athlete. An individual must display exceptional dedication, skill, physical fitness and team spirit over an extended time period. At Master Myung’s Taekwondo Academy, we offer two High Performance programs.

STOUFFVILLE SUCCESS STORIES

The Evolution of Taekwondo into an Olympic Sport

Olympic Taekwondo, also called sport Taekwondo or WTF-style Taekwondo, is a specialized form of Taekwondo focused on competitive sparring. Its origins trace back to the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), which established the Kukkiwon, the official headquarters for Taekwondo, in Seoul in 1972. A year later, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) was founded to promote Taekwondo globally as a competitive sport.

In 1980, Taekwondo sparring received recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), setting the stage for Taekwondo’s inclusion in the Olympics. By 2000, Taekwondo made its official debut at the Sydney Olympic Games, where it captivated audiences with its speed, agility, and powerful kicks.

The Unique Style of Olympic TKD

Dynamic Kicking Techniques

Olympic Taekwondo is widely admired for its impressive and varied kicking techniques. Known for powerful kicks like the spinning hook kick and roundhouse kick, Olympic-style Taekwondo places a strong emphasis on footwork, agility, and precision. The beauty of this sport lies in its high-speed, counter-attacking style, where fighters often wait for the perfect moment to counter an opponent’s strike with an explosive kick to the body or head.

Focus on Counter-Attacks

Unlike some martial arts that prioritize initial attacks, Olympic TKD values counter-attacks. This approach requires fighters to anticipate their opponent’s moves and respond quickly. The result is a fast-paced, tactical experience where competitors must think strategically and act swiftly. Each match can feel like a “chess game” of movements, where timing, skill, and positioning are crucial.

Key Rules in Olympic Competition

Olympic TKD has strict rules that ensure safety while maximizing the sport’s dynamic nature. Here are the main rules followed in Olympic-style competitions:

  • Kicking is Key: Points are awarded primarily for kicking techniques. Kicks to the torso and head score higher, while punches are only allowed to the torso.
  • Restricted Target Areas: Strikes to the back, spine, neck, and below the waist are prohibited.
  • Prohibited Actions: No grappling, leg grabbing, or headbutting is allowed.
  • Protective Gear: Competitors wear headgear and a chest protector (hogu) to minimize injury risk.

These rules emphasize kicking and footwork, creating an environment where fighters can perform powerful kicks without the threat of grappling or wrestling maneuvers.
